Aakash Nihalani is a street artist who is most well known for his pieces that incorporate coloured tape. He describes his work as using 'isometric rectangles and squares' to 'highlight unexpected contours and elegant geometry of the city itself.' Based largely in New York Nihalani's work draws attention to everyday city living and industrial spaces.

Los Angeles, Leak While his work is technically street art, I believe that it also falls under the category of installation as it is created in reaction to the environment or space in which is is created. Installing these works draws attention to mundane or everyday city scenes or environments. the luminous quality of the tape colour adds a level of playfulness and heightened interest to areas that were perhaps previous grey, rundown or bare. His use of rigid shapes is an interesting choice as it correlates well with the industrial and uniform buildings of New York and other large cities. Fluid and organic shapes would have created more contrast but the geometric and controlled shapes add a sense of purpose and belonging to his works. Both his indoor and outdoor works take advantage of the space that they occupy and either lend to the overall environment or point out a previously overlooked aspect. Unlike street artists such as Banksy or JR Nihalani's work doesn't necessarily aim to show the hidden truths or dark realities of the world around us, but aims to add colour and light to darkened or forgotten places. |
