paper, tape, light. video projection onto origami Joanie Lemercier is a Bristol based artist whose work is primarily based in sculpture as he uses light projections on 3 dimensional surfaces. Usually working in large spaces and focusing on architectural surfaces, this piece was the result of exploring with a smaller space and pencil and paper.
'This piece is a result of a short residency I did in a gallery space near Birmingham (UK) a few weeks ago. All I used was A4 paper, folded into 7 different sizes pyramids, and taped to the wall. I really like using a very basic geometric shape, and repeat it several times to create more organic structures. I then use a video projector to map the light onto the structure and to animate the composition. I am now working on similar pieces on a much smaller scale made of porcelain.' (Quote from artist)
I chose to research this artist, primarily because of this piece, as for my ''Aluminations' project I have been considering using the projector as part of my installation, Like this structure I will use the projector to cast shadows onto the work, however instead of adding colour to the work, I hope to simply suggest that the projector is producing 3 dimensional objects.
This work is dissimilar in that sense as the physical projector isn't a part of the installation. Only the effect that the projector creates is part of the work.

I find that I am always drawn to works involving light and shadows as it creates a sense of atmosphere, whether foreboding or uplifting. This work by Lemercier seems quiet indicative of solar systems and stars because of the small pinholes of light shining through the canvas. Whether intentional or not, I think this work would appeal to a wide range of people as it can be interpreted in any way as no pictorial or figurative forms are represented.
Lemercier created a visual label in 2006 called ANTIVJ, along with five other European artists who use projected light to influence peoples perceptions of their environments. Primarily using live performances and installations, ANTIVJ's work will often involve 3D structure, music and light effects to create large and interactive spaces. Lemercier left this group that he had created after five years as he felt that working with so many creative individuals often lead to lengthy problems and confinement as one idea had to be approved by the whole group. That said, ANTIVJ have and still do create remarkable works;
